The R Kids

These two little girls just became big sisters to a baby boy! We were asked to photograph this little guy at three weeks old, so those trendy sleepy portraits were out of the question! (Although, we desperately tried.) But because of the time of year, these shots will be awesome for the R Family's Christmas cards.

We set up our studio equipment in our own home so everything could be set up and ready to go when the family arrived. The girls had no problem posing adorably and making silly faces. And when little brother was brought onto the set, they were more than willing to snuggle him.

We love the SJC Train Station any time of year, but the red door and rustic atmosphere make wonderfully festive Christmas card photos.

This gorgeous family recently scheduled a family portrait session with us. We agreed on shooting by the Montage Resort in Laguna Beach and took advantage of the beautiful park-scape, sandy beach and natural architecture of the cliffs.

Okay, I went to high school with this cute couple! I'm so glad they trusted us to do their Holiday Portraits ---

This was a BEAUTIFUL day to photograph at the beach. And this is why we moved back to southern California, it got up to 84 degrees at the beach at the end of November! I even had to edit out someone laying out on the beach enjoying the sunshine at 9:30 am. It wasn't the prettiest site, so I am sure they didn't want him in their portraits!

We've photographed this cute family before and were excited when they asked us to do their Holiday Portraits this year. They requested that their photo shoot take place at the Seal Beach Pier because it has special meaning to their family and friends.

This was our first time photographing a family at the pier, and although the wind and rain made things a little chilly and difficult, the photos captured this fun family's fun spirit.

The R Family - Holiday Portraits

What a cute family! They found us through a holiday boutique a couple of weeks ago in Ladera Ranch to support a child with brain cancer. My sister and sister-in-law were both there displaying posh baby items - sweetiebug - and 3 Sisters' Toffee and let me put up a sample photo and leave our business cards at their booth.

This photoshoot took place at one of my favorite spots. It holds special meaning to me because it is where my husband and I had our first kiss, went on many dates, and got engaged! We also took our last family portrait there with my friend Kristy Perkins, who was out visiting from Idaho.

This beach location has a variety of beautiful vistas, natural architecture, and lush vegetation. We could spent hours photographing here!

It can sometimes be difficult to get young children to smile at a perfect stranger, but Marvin did a pretty good job with these two. I also personally love the shots of the family facing the waves with their name written in the sand. Marvin has done these kinds of shots before and I love them every time!

Holiday Portraits - The S Family

This family found us through thumbtack.com! During the pre-holiday season, we run a portrait special that is perfect for holiday cards and families with young children --- and it proved to be just what this family was looking for.

We had to closely monitor the weather because it had previously been forecasted to rain, and we were all thrilled when the rain was delayed until later in the week! After photographing in Utah for the past two autumns, we are thankful that we don't have to worry about snow!

These portraits were taken at the Talega Golf Course. The green grass and turning leaves made it a colorful location to photograph. Aren't these kiddos adorable?!

We LOVE this family! They are so awesome. We were asked to do head shots of the kids to put on canvas and hang as art in their new home. This was our second time photographing the youngest daughter, whom I dubbed "Miss Sassy Pants" after our last photo shoot - she was just as sassy this time around!

Just a few days before the photo shoot, Momma Z decided she wanted a quick family portrait, too --- just for a Christmas card this year. After she saw the proofs, she decided she loved the family pic and wants to order a canvas of that one, too. Just goes to show you that you can be surprised with how good your family can look when you're all together :) And it may not be as painful as you expect!

What to Wear for Holiday Portraits

We LOVE taking Holiday Family Portraits! Planning what to wear may be a little tricky, and we are ALWAYS asked what we recommend to wear for Family Portrait Sessions.

Here are some tips that we've found helpful:

1. Wear the same kind of bottoms. Whether it be khakis, jeans, or shorts - matching bottoms and/or the color of the bottoms help the group look coordinated and help the portrait look like more than just a really good snapshot.

2. For large groups: wearing the same colored top helps your family look coordinated. White or black tops will set your group apart from the background. You could also choose another color as long as it's not one of the colors of your background. You can add a little color or spunk with coordinating accessories - headbands, bows or jewelry for girls and shoes or belts for the guys.

3. For small groups: wear coordinating colors on top to break up the group and help each individual stand out. You can even try breaking it up with a subtle stripe or pattern. Choose accessories or layer clothing (like adding a cardigan) to coordinate your look. For example, if your husband is wearing a brown shirt and you are wearing a white one, choose some brown accessories or a brown cardigan to help tie the two of you together, but make each of you stand out as individuals.

5. If you'd like to add some festive flair to your photo choose basic neutral colors (white and black work very well) and accent them with greens or reds (jewelry, shoes, belts, hair accessories, etc). This will help you be the focus of your portrait and ensure that your wardrobe doesn't outshine you or clash with your background. Also, if you plan on enlarging a photograph, it's a good idea to choose colors that will go well with the decor of the room you will be displaying it in.

4. Every family is unique. Wear the colors in which you feel you look the best and are most comfortable.

We LOVE these guys! Marvin and I became friends with Kristy and Daris way back in our BYU days. They moved to Idaho shortly after we met, but we've remained close friends despite the distance. They decided to come down to southern California for a little family vacation and we were lucky enough to spend some time with them. Kristy has her own photography business at home so we decided to do a photography session swap. I'm just so glad we got to see them. Taking photos of them was just an added bonus!

Wow! It has been a LONG time since I've seen this old friend! I've known Jeff since high school and now all of a sudden we're all grown up with spouses and children! This adorable family won a photo shoot giveaway almost two years ago when we first opened our photography business. Due to locational challenges (we were in Utah, they were in Southern California) we hadn't been able to photograph them until now. Their little guy was an absolute dream to photograph. He was so easy going and completely cute.

I think Los Rios Street is now one of our favorite family portrait spots. There are a variety of structural elements that are eye-catching and artistic. The train depot gives a fun family vibe that isn't your everyday Southern California beach scene (which we still love!).

This little girl is full of sass! We had a blast setting up our new studio equipment at her home so we could capture her attitude on camera. We're still perfecting our technique with indoor lighting, but I think some of these shots turned out great!

This family is fun-loving and wonderful! As lovers of the beach, they wanted something a little different than standard beach family portraits. So they chose to use the Monarch Beach Golf Course that overlooks Salt Creek Beach. The wind was stirring a little, but with the constant marine layer, we took our chances. Goofiness abounds when working with young children and this group was no exception!

Black Knights Baseball 3.30.11

Marvin was invited by his cousin to take photos of her son's baseball game last week. Marvin jumped at the chance to photograph the Black Knights Little League Team. The special part about it is that the game took place at the same field he used to play Little League on growing up in Long Beach, California.

We love working on projects like this because it reminds us of good times. Baseball is a special part of Marvin's life and of his family's life. He grew up going to LA Dodger games and playing Little League. Sometimes, he might even get a little teary-eyed when talking about it.

Overall, he got some pretty impressive images of Jack (the catcher) and his teammates. Check them out!

The owners of Ocean Hills Recovery have been our good friends for years. Greg Doss and Nicole Folmar-Doss wanted to reach out to alcoholics an addicts and provide them with successful residential recovery programs. They offer individual, group and family therapy, qualified and caring staff, licensed therapists, and a 12-step based recovery program in a home setting.

We were honored to take photos of their office located in Dana Point, California.

Shannon, Adam & Tank 2.12.11

This is our first official photo shoot since moving back to Southern California. Shannon is one of my best friends and we've known each other since high school. She asked us to do the Save the Date photos for her upcoming wedding. And we were even more delighted when she told us she wanted to include her 8 year old chihuahua, Tank! Of course, the photos included the fantastic upcoming addition to her family, Adam. They truly are a happy and fun couple! And I love Tank's ears (just say "Grammy" and he fully extends their wing span!).

Sorry this post is LONG overdue! Jessica is one of my VERY best friends and we gave her a free photo shoot for her 30th birthday back in October. She and Trevor are an awesome couple. We needed to do this shoot before our big move to southern California and it was supposed to be snowing up at Sundance Resort, but it was windy and raining instead! I loved the way some of these photos turned out in black and white and this aged sepia wash I've been creating gives them a rustic feel.

Thanks to our friend Lindsey, we had the privilege of providing free photography for this family that won our Giveaway on The R House Blog. Here is a little bit about them from the person who nominated them:

"I saw this contest and I couldn't resist. I knew exactly what family deserves this photo shoot. They aren't a hoping to adopt couple, but one of my neighbors and friends. The Harpoles not only deserve this photo shoot but desperately need it! You see Greg Harpole (the dad) was having horrible migraines. Then after arriving to work one day noticed smells were incredibly intensified. His wife, Heather, took him into the hospital where a MRI revealed a cancerous brain tumor. This is how selfless, amazing and courageous this family is. Heather is my visiting teacher. Her world was crumbling, yet she sat on my couch and listened to me babble about my "irritations in life" and never mentioned the devastating news her family had just received. She's just that kind of person!

They are the type of family who continues to even serve people in our ward while undergoing the saddest trial of their lives. Heather was one of the first to show up on my door step when my sister passed away.

Greg has battled a while now but a recent MRI has discovered the tumor has multiplied and can not be treated any more. They have given him 3 months to live.

We all like pictures of our family. They hang on our wall, we adore them until new ones replace the old. This family needs a final family picture. Something the kids can keep forever of when there dad was still with them.

The Harpoles don't know I'm entering them. They are incredibly shy and humble of any help."

Marvin truly enjoyed working with this family and watching how they interacted with each other. He could tell that Greg was struggling, but was trying to have a good time. He was humorous, loving and a great example of what a father should be. We hope this family can treasure these pictures for years to come and that they will be reminded of their father and all that he means to them.

We met this cute family back in Ithaca, NY when we were both in graduate school! It was so fun to see them after over a year! We made our final trip up to our favorite park in Provo Canyon for their photo shoot. This was the last weekend before the leaves turn completely brown and start falling to leave bare branches, but we just love the yellow grasses and the mountain view!

Their little girl was the best behaved toddler EVER! All we had to do was sing to get her to smile. I am sure Shannah & Skyler NEVER want to hear me sing again! I think Savvy might have also had a little crush on our 3 1/2 year old little boy, Luke. She loved watching him and we had to make sure he was standing right by Marvin so she would look at the camera!

Erica (Ernie) is one of my co-workers at RiverWoods Pet Hospital and I was really excited when she asked us to take her Engagement Photos. Ernie & Pat are getting married next July, but Ernie loves the fall and wanted some Engagement photos done during the most colorful time of year. We used the railroad tracks at Vivian Park in Provo Canyon and also went up to Marvin's new favorite spot at the top of our favorite park in the canyon.

Their wedding will be Western themed and I thought some of the sepia tones helped to give the photos a more western vintage look. We also brought out the blue denim color to give the pictures a more unique feel.

Outdoor Lighting & Why the Time of Day Matters

We love outdoor photography! Marvin prefers to photograph with natural light. Although we can photograph during any time of day, there are certain hours when the lighting is softer and more flattering. We often schedule photo shoots for specific times of the day so your portraits will be the absolute best they can be! Because of the change of the seasons and daylight savings time, we often have to adjust our photos shoot times to get the best possible lighting.

The early morning light can be very soft and provides good lighting from west to east on the valley floors. The high mountains block the early morning light in the canyons making it shadowy.

The middle of the day is the worst time for outdoor photos. The high noon sun creates lots of shadows and can be very unflattering by washing out skin tones and colors. During events like Weddings, we can make up for this harsh lighting by using external flash equipment and adjusting the photos for color and vibrance with editing software.

The evening light just before sunset is our favorite! The lighting is very warm and flattering to skin tones. In addition, there are less shadows. We prefer evening photo shoots at all locations, especially in the canyons (although we have to make them a little bit earlier at higher elevations because we lose light so fast after sunset!).

If it's cloudy, don't fret! Clouds and overcast skies actually make for better pictures because they help cut down on shadows and glare. Dramatic clouds can actually be a great backdrop to an outdoor portrait, too.

So, if you were wondering why we always recommend evening photo shoots, that's why! Of course, we are always available to photograph you at any time of day as long as we're available. We understand that sometimes it's difficult to get family together at certain times of day or having to work around nap and bed times for little ones ... but there you have it!

1. Wear the same kind of bottoms. Whether it be khakis, jeans, or shorts - matching bottoms help the group look coordinated and help the portrait look like more than just a really good snapshot.

2. For large groups: wearing the same colored top helps your family look coordinated. White or black tops will set your group apart from the background. Commercial Shoot for the City of Santaquin Utah

This was a really fun shoot! One of our freelance PR friends picked up this gig and invited us to participate. The City of Santaquin set up an all day photo shoot with a VERY full schedule. We started at 7:00 AM with horseback riding. The day also included mountain biking, hiking, four-wheeling, and a plethora of other activities. Here are a few of our favorite photos from the day. You'll probably see some of them on Santaquin's website in the future!

We LOVE taking outdoor family portraits! Planning what to wear may be a little tricky, and we are ALWAYS asked what we recommend to wear for Family Portrait Sessions. With the beautiful green foliage and colorful blossoms, summer is an awesome time to have your family portrait taken!

1. While black and white tops are easy to coordinate for large groups and help set the group apart from the background, they tend to blend individuals of small groups together.

2. Wear the same kind of bottoms. Whether it be khakis, jeans, or shorts - matching bottoms help the group look coordinated, and help the portrait look like more than just a really good snapshot. You can mix it up by having the girls where skirts and the boys wear pants or shorts out of the same material.

3. For small groups: wear coordinating colors on top to break up the group and help each individual stand out. You can even try breaking it up with a subtle stripe. Accessories can be a great way to coordinate colors and make individuals stand out.

4. Keep in mind that the Summer Colors are mostly greens. Wearing this color may help you blend into the background! Instead, choose colors that will set you apart and make you the focus of the portrait.

5. It's also a good idea to ask your photographer what background they will be using. You'll want to choose colors that contrast with that brick building or stone wall you might be standing in front of. You can always view their portfolio or ask for specific images from the photo shoot site so you can determine what is the best look for your family.
